You Can Now Build Android Apps With Just a Prompt

Google AI Studio turns a prompt into a real Android app. Here's how it works, plus where to learn it step by step.

Hey there,

Have you ever wished you could build an app for your phone but got discouraged by the complex setup or how overwhelming it seemed? Well Google AI Studio’s latest update was made for you. You can now build native Android apps from a single prompt without leaving your browser. No setup headaches, and no new programming language to struggle with. This week we’ll look at how app building in AI Studio works and where you can learn to build these apps.

How building apps in AI Studio works

If you’ve spent any time in AI Studio then you’re already familiar with the basic loop. You open Build mode, describe what you want, and wait while it brings your idea to life. After that, you can continue to refine your app with further prompts and watch how your app changes with the live preview. For those with coding experience, you can directly view and edit the code for any manual changes. Vibe coding tools like this are the fastest way to bring an idea to life.

Until recently, you could only create web apps (websites) within AI Studio. While you could build an entire frontend and backend and even deploy your app without leaving Google AI Studio, you were still limited to creating a web app. In 2026 most people are constantly on their phones, and while you can use your web apps on mobile devices, it's never as smooth as when you use an actual phone app.

Building Android apps from a prompt

This is the new feature that was released at Google I/O this year. AI Studio now builds fully native Android apps. This means the apps you create are treated just like ones you would find on the Play Store and can perform actions like sending you notifications. To create one of these Android apps, you’ll need to select “Build an Android app” and describe your idea. Behind the scenes, Google will use its recommended developer toolkit to create a professional-level app that you can start testing immediately.

You can easily test your ideas by using AI Studio’s new built-in Android emulator. This runs in your browser and is only one click away. No special software or subscription is needed. Once the app looks good, you can plug your phone in and install it directly onto your device. Alternatively, you can connect to your Google Play developer account and send it straight to the Play Store’s internal testing with a single click.

Building Android apps with AI Studio is still a new feature, so only the core capabilities are available right now. You can do things like connect to the Gemini API to create AI-powered apps or tap into your device’s data and features like GPS, Camera, or Bluetooth. What you can’t do yet is connect to features like Firebase or Workspace APIs but we can expect these to come in future updates. Depending on what you’re trying to build, you might need to eventually move your project to Android Studio but that is an entirely optional move.

Want to actually build one?

Reading about this new feature only gets you so far and the best way to understand it is to build something for yourself. That is exactly what our course, Build Real Apps with Google AI Studio, was created to do. It takes you from a blank prompt to a finished, shareable app with no coding background needed. We are constantly adding new projects and video guides so it keeps up with AI Studio’s latest updates. This week’s lesson walks through building an Android app from scratch with step-by-step instructions. This course is perfect for anyone who wants to go from reading about it to actually doing it.
